The differences in power consumption between the majority of models is pretty insignificant relative to the overall system consumption for most systems, especially above 13". There are several threads in this subforum with comparisons of the current HDDs and I believe Anandtech has been used for a good comparison between HDDs.

Define "good" performance. In terms of benchmarks? Overall system responsiveness?

If you want a HDD that runs cooler I would suggest the WD5000BEVT, it can be bought for around 50-60 dollars. If you don't mind the extra heat or have good cooling I would go with the WD5000BEKT.

The Hitachi 7K500 is cooler, quieter and faster than the BEVT and uses about the same power.

    I've had both. :)

Still a Hitachi drive. And I avoid Hitachi like the plague.

You can avoid it but it does have a good track record. I normally avoid Seagate/Hitachi hard drives but for laptops I couldn't find anything better then the Hitachi 7k500 7200 rpm hard drive for mechanical hard drives. I wasn't about to jump to the Momentus XT bandwagon when they were dropping left/right because of a bad firmware update, that plus Seagate is a pleasure to deal with

The 7k500 is a very good choice. As is the WD500BEKT. Or the 640GB HM660JJ. Point is they're all pretty good.

Hitachi is the Mercedes of the laptop HDDs. Reliability, speed, low heat, low noise and vibration, normal power consumption.

I also second the Hitachi 7k500, wonderful drive, fast, runs cool, and great performer, no noise or vibration that i notice. If you want something that consumes more check Hitachi 5k500b, it was one of the lowest consumption drives but its 5400rpm, so dont expect great performance.

Don't forget to check the Samsung HM640JJ, also a great performer which is very quiet.

You can check the reviews at Newegg.

I also recommend the 7K500. I have the WD5000BEVT, WD5000BEKT, and 7K500. The WD5000BEVT is the quietest drive but the 7K500 is very, very close to it and is noticeably more responsive in everyday use. The WD5000BEVT gets bogged down quite easily during any sort of multitasking involving disk access.

General conclusion is that they're both very very close. Hitachi seems to be good overall, but the Scorpio Black pulls ahead in intense multi-tasking situations, according to reviews and benchmarks. In general, you can't go wrong with either.

    thanks judicator.... well said.... :)

although if we consider only vibration, noise, heat & power consumption....

    Then which is better...?

Then the 7K500 ranks better - according to people (here) who have used both.
