    Hey All,

I was wondering if I could buy two 2 gig memory sticks from say newegg and then install then onto my new laptop for a total of 4 gigs. Is this possible or do I need to keep the ram it came with? Thanks in advance. :)

If you are talking about the XPS 1330 then yes as long as you have a 64bit OS but you probably dont need 4gb now(2gb is fine for most people). Also look at the Hot Ram deals thread for great prices on DRR2-667 ram.

You should be able to upgrade your ram to 4gb on a new laptop without any issues as long as the laptop supports 4gb.

    Which model are you purchasing?

If your talking about the XPS M1330, then yes it will take 4GB of ram, but you need a 64bit OS to take full advantage of all 4 GBs. And yes, you can buy 2 gig sticks from newegg or any other reputable dealer and replace the ram yourself.

Not with the 1520 currently. The 1520 has the 32-bit version of Vista. Which only allows up to 3.2 GB's of RAM. So if you want the most RAM you can get, then buy a 2 GB stick and a 1 GB stick, but I would advise you to just get a 2 GB stick, for a total of 2.5 GB's. Then in the future, when the 32-bit Vista is capable of running more than 3.2 GB's of RAM, then buy another 2 GB stick so that you can have dual-channel and 4 GB's of RAM.

I don't mind not being able to utilize all 4 gigs as of yet. The computer is going to be a present so I'd like to upgrade to 4 gigs regardless. So are you saying the 1520 won't accept the two 2 gig cards that I put in? Also to clarify, If I was going to upgrade the ram myself, I would buy the computer with 1 gig already in. Will Dell put two 512 cards in?

Yes it should, but it will only utilize around 3.2GB of the 4GB of ram, with a 32-bit OS.

Generally you get two 512mb sodimms instead of a 1gb sodimm
