I know this site is for notebook. I hope there is a desktop counterpart.

ANyways... your suggestion is very much appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS T600 with Pentium III. I am planning to upgrade the processor. (Is that possible?) I already ask the Dell, they say they don't recommend it.
But of course, Dell plays it safe. Just like the hard drive, they limit you to 80 GB( which is the tested limit...from the year it was built... but of course, hard drive have progressed....but not the testing)

Is it OK to upgrade the processor on a Pentium III desktop? What are the compatible processor I can install?

like you said, this is a notebook forum. but to help you out a bit. Search around and find out what socket your CPU is. Then go to newegg ( http://www.newegg.com) and do a processor search with that socket type. Usually helps to find the processor type too, usually noted in nm or mu-m (nano meters or micro meters, mu looks like a funny u) That will help you find what is compatiable with your motherboard

You won't be able to upgrade anything other than another PIII since PIIIs use a differnet socket than P4s. You could try to replace the motherbaord as well, but Dell and other PC makers tend to use specialized connectors making it difficult to use an off the shelf motherboard. They also tend to use weak power supplies, just enough to power what is in the box now. A P4 uses a lot more power than a PIII. I think your best bet is to head over FatWallet, XPBargains, and/or Slickdeals to see what kind of bargains you can find. Last weeks, CompUSA had a Compaq with a Athlon64 for a little over $100 after rebates which is less than what a P4 CPU will cost you. Good Luck.
