I have a gateway mx3702 with 2 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive. I have the stock 1.6 GHz processor. the specs are here:

Gateway Support - MX3702 Notebook Specifications

so i currently have the intel core duo T2050.

i actually replaced the motherboard awhile back so know the exact model. it is a 40GAB1230-C300. it's specs for a processor are:

    Supported: IntelĀ® Yonah CeleronĀ® M
    Package: Socket uFCPGA 478 pin
    FSB: 533 MHz

For more of the mobo specs you can go here and scroll down to the "Compatible Specification":

    Gateway MX3143m MX3701 MX3702 MT3104b Motherboard | eBay

So my question is what is the most powerful processor I can upgrade to with this motherboard? Some research led me to believe it might even be possible to utilize a core 2 duo processor.

anyway, thanks in advance. i would just like to know the most powerful processor for sure as my own research had people on the net saying different processors.

You can probably upgrade to any Core 2 Duo CPU that uses Socket M. Well, you can try...

However, there's probably little to no benefit for doing that.

What are the general uses for your laptop which you are trying to improve?

Why is there little to no benefit for doing that? I've read elsewhere, excluding core 2 duo, that I could upgrade to a 2.33 GHz processor; isn't that significant enough improvement or am i missing something?

I work with Cubase and other audio applications. Basically a lot of multitasking and a lot of simultaneous tracks of audio running with varying degrees of plugins attached to them.

Check CPU usage in Task Manager when you are doing work. If CPU usage is high then I guess it would make it worth it.
