I guess i should start by saying this is an upgrade question and that i have done the research and it may boil down to actually trying to the upgrade.

So I'm monkeying around with one of these, Toshiba Satellite A105-S1712 Specs (Celeron M 1.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD) - Laptops - CNET Reviews

Except it I generously upgraded it to an Pentium M 775, 2gb DDR 2 533 and WD Black 7200rpm several years ago, not too shabby at all and is fairly snappy in win 7.

It runs an ATI Xpress 200m video card, an RC410 not sure if this has bearing on which chipset it is or not.

Didn't find much about the chipset other than it's an 04' and has sata

Comparison of ATI chipsets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I did note something interesting on the socket though

Socket 479 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Now that got me thinking this does have DDR 2 and is an 04' annnddd they did sell as similar model with a Core Solo,

Toshiba Satellite A105-S4034 Specs (Core Solo 1.86 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 100 GB HDD) - Laptops - CNET Reviews

I wonder if it can support Core Solo. Grant it if it did it would either be a low wattage version for 10 watt higher version but, Still I wonder if it can indeed support a Core Solo and if something like U1500 would be faster than a Pentium M 755? At the least a T1350 that os solder in alternate version A105 would absolutely murder it. Talk about an upgrade!

    Intel Core Solo U1500 LE80538UE0142MX

    Intel Core Solo T1350 LF80538GE0362M (BX80538T1350)

    EDIT: http://www.anandtech.com/show/1404 ,It may support DDR2 667.

I would try to Pinmod for further overclock to make a 2.0 Ghz processor to a 2.67 Ghz and increase it on 33%.

    Reasons not to overclock:
    - you will increase voltage level. Now you should have 1.34V. You will have to increase it up o 1.406V or even 1.596V (most likely).
    - temperature increases much.
    - It works with 533Mhz chipsets only and was made on i915 intel SODOMA chipset. Not sure if your chipset is supported so... somewhat dangerous.
And yeah... it may leave your warranty :D

    About your question
That newer laptops you are talking about have
    Front Side Bus 533.0 MHz
    Chipset Mobile Intel 945GM Express.

Maybe this is why they can use that processor. You need to find out Front side bus (fsb) of your laptop. If it is only 400Mhz then you can't either overclock or buy better CPU except M 765

I don't really know the front side bus other than it supports 400mhz so i guess to find if it support 533 i would have to install 533mhz bus cpu to find out.

Interesting though his did come Yonah stock. i might take this in to work and try a Core 2 with faster ram and see if it boots.

    interesting.

now I'm thinking if my old P4-2.66GHz can be upgraded too, lol

    533FSB, Socket 478 mPGA, chipset - ATI200/ATI200M, gpu - ATI Radeon IGP 345M (RS200M)

... hm ... probably not worth even thinking about. Thought the setup looks similar to yours.

The pin out KEY is different newer CPUs won't physically fit. i did find an SL7S9 not sure if it would be faster or just the same performance. Does any one know why the pin mod overclock only works with intel Sonoma chipsets?

Pin Modding and Overclocking a Pentium M Guide

Interesting enough while i had it open i had noticed USB port fell out so might as well take care of that while im inside.

    EDIT: found this and this,

    http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/deal-discussion/577639/?start=0

    http://www.ati.com/products/radeonxpress200mIntel/specs.html

Going by the conversations in the forum it seems it is pin modable with the Xpress 200m

EDIT: did the pin mod the bios still showed 2ghz but, it acted very unstable to be fair that is with 533mhz DDR2 and no volt mods, i didn't see any volt mod guides.
