I am looking into buying an ssd and I have a few questions... first, how long do they last? I have heard that they will die before a hard drive under heavy use. Is it bad to burn movies on it? (since that writes to hard drive and then back to disc)?

I dont think a SSD is optimal for video work, yes its fast but storage space is limited. The write cycle from working with video on a SSD regularly probably would really reduce the life of a SSD considerably.

But they say it will last like 5 years with XXGB of stuff written to it daily, I forget the actual spec, and thats for MLC, a SLC would last even longer.

I don't think you would see any benefit burning dvd's either because it is limited by the speed of the DVD drive. But the rest of your PC experience would improve :)

You should have no problems with drive failure with any of the latest SSDs, although it's hard to say because no one has had them for 5-10yrs yet...

SSDs are more reliable than Hard Drives -- no moving physical components. If you're going for the highest performance (random seek times, etc) and need data reliability than SSD is the way to go. However, traditional disk-platter drives are alright if you're willing to have data redundancy backup drives. They'll be slower, but the difference right now isn't large.

I can't remember where the source is, but one of Intel's guys said with some certainty that the controller in an SSD is far more likely to fail before you ever run out of write cycles and have an unusable disk.

Haha, one of Intel's guys. Which is it? My dad works at Intel.

You should post the article if you can find it so we can analyze it.

I appreciate the offer, but I don't need any encouragement to spend the money on another CPU. :D

My current CPU is more than I need.
