i have a dell xps first generation and the mr 9800 is acting up. my games are getting very low frames per second. i have tried reinstallin the drivers but that didnt help, i tried reinstalling direct x and again nothing. the cpu is running very hot at 66C the video card idles at 54c but in general the whole computer runs hot. any suggestions?

The XPS 1st Gen is a P4 w/ HT isn't it? If you're not using a cooling pad I'd suggest you to, also if you're not doing this already, cleaning out the vents with compressed air would be a very good idea. P4s run very hot though, even in larger laptops they still produce quite a bit of heat, if it's idling at 66 though that is a problem.
As for the slowing down of games, have you tried changing drivers? Or are you using to ones supplied by dell's site? Basically asking if by upgrade you meant changed to a different one and got the newest of it or got the newest offered by dell. -

It is funny, 2 years ago I was dying to get one of those with a 128 ati radeon, now it became something retarded.
I guess your fan and cooler has accumulated dust and need to be cleaned, you might have to take the cooler out of the machine to make sure it is 100% clean.
It is still a good laptop though... the HT feature is never a bad thing.
