i selected to do a normal format, not a quick one and it is taking forever. can i simply reboot the computer while in this process and start over or will this be harmful?

    wrong section...

but to answer your question. Which drive is it? If its not your OS drive you can cancel the format anytime and just re-format it. You will lose whatever is in the drive one way or the other

no OS, i am installing an OS on a new hard drive so no data to lose. there is no option to cancel the format, i would have to do a hard reboot. so i guess i can with no worries?

this is the low level format btw, it is at 63%.

Actually, if its the first time you have ever run a full format yourself on that drive I'd recommend you let it finish. It will scan the whole drive and make sure you are not using any sectors that do not work.
