I just bought a portable 500GB seagate freeagent goflex hard drive. I want my computer to recognize it like a normal hard drive without all that software on it. for example I dont like to do the autoback up process and the seagate dashboard or the memeo. I like to manually back up my stuff like you would normally do on a flash drive or older hard drive. Like dragging it to the drive or send to drive e and it send it.

but if i send something to the drive, it says windows cannot create a shortcut here. do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead ?

Its like windows detects whats on the drive as a software not a storage device.

I have windows 7, what can I do to fix it how I want to do it.

ALso I have an HP DV7 with an esata port, I cant find on ebay or on other sites the Esata enclosure for the freeagent. I see one on amazon for 21 bucks, but does anyone have any recomendations of where else to get one ? I thought ive seen em before for 15 bucks.

Can you format the drive to NTFS? If you can, you should be able to use it as a giant USB 'key'.

If not, I would return it (I too want full control of what gets put on an external - and when).

You should have bought the bare drive and enclosure to protect your F.A.warranty if the case is damaged to open. Newegg is a good source for enclosures and bare drives.
