Hello all, i have an older hp compaq 7000. my screen was black, but if i use an external monitor everything is fine.

Before i attempted to replace my back light, i replaced my screen inverter. Picture came up right away, but after 10 minutes of being on, i whining noise is coming from the inverter area, it really starts to heat up, then the screen will flicker on and off. if i shut it down and let it cool , it will come back on for 10 min then the same issues will return.

What would cause the inverter to make the whining noise and heat up?
would the back light effect this?
    Thanks for reading

Sounds like a bad inverter, did it come with a warranty?

Not really, piked it up on Ebay!

My concern is, if i were to get another one and the same thing happens, what might it be?

How many days do you have to return it?

I think you just got a defective inverter. Also since it has been defective since day one, the seller should let you send it back. If not, open a PayPal dispute for the money.

    I will do that.

My question is, if i receive a new one and the same thing happens. What else would cause this problem?

It might not even be defective, just really really cheap.

Find one that is 'original' for your brand of laptop. It will likely work even if its not listed for your exact model, as long as it was for a similar type of screen.

edit: My inverter died recently and I'm using one from an entirely different brand. It wont dim, but it works really well and I think its just because it was from an actual decent quality laptop.

I have tried 3 other inverters, all of them different brands, the laptop will work for the first 15 minutes, then once the laptop warms up, the high pitch sounds comes from the inverter area, the screen flickers, then goes black.

Once i let it cool down, its ok for 15 minutes again, then the same thing happens. What would cause the inverter to heat up? Obviously the back light is working, the inverter seems to be working, what supplies the inverter?

    Ooh.

In that case I would think that its your actual backlight.
I really dont think your motherboard and voltage ICs could screw up the inverter that badly... if your motherboard is the culprit you've got bigger problems coming.

You should be able to find another screen to test, even if you dont habitually surround yourself with laptops parts like me. A trusting friends laptop will do, make sure its the same size, aspect ratio and backlight type which should be apparent.
You may not even have to dismantle this screen. If you can get the laptops close enough together, just try to power the other backlight with your inverter

Inverters are very electrically sensitive devices.

Laptop Repair Help How to test LCD screen inverter in a laptop

Very good guide on how to test it with a multimeter.

I know they are sensitive... I can't tell if your reply was meant for me...

In any case I wouldn't bet the OP has a multimeter. Thanks for the link though.
