He can basically use any 200 pin DDR SODIMM

    Crucial DDR333/400 should be good...

and as a bonus there is a comment by a user on newegg who mentions that it works on a zv6005.

Beneath the keyboard. Check around HP.com for the service manual. It should list the instructions on how to access it. Changing that will probably void your warranty.

Hmm... might be bad memory. Ask him to run memtest86( http://www.memtest.org/) overnight and see if it turns up any errors.

Also test the system by running only the crucial memory and try alternating it with the other slot.

The memory test is run off a bootable CD. So all you need to do is download the program and burn it as an ISO image onto a CD(basically a bootable CD) and run the program.

In any case, since the computer BSOD'ed after installing the RAM, faulty memory is the most probable cause. Return/exchange the memory and try a different stick.

Well, either your friend is something wrong or there might be some conflict with some hardware which might be causing the BSOD when the memory is added.

The only other thing I can think of is you could try contacting HP and see what they have to say. If your friend is willing to then try buying the overpriced RAM from HP themselves and see if it works, otherwise it might be some other issue.
