I'm in the market for a new notebook hard drive since im running low on space wit the Hitachi 7K60 60GB HD I currently have and need more hard drive space for my audio education. So I went seachin around and I came upon this Toshiba 100GB 540RPM Notebook HD at ZipZoomFly selling for $159.99 shipped. I been reading a few reviews, and i'm fairly satisfied with em, but i'm lookin 4 some advice.....should i look into it or does anybody have any better options....

    Thanx

    isnt a 100gb 5400 HD pretty much the same speed as a 60 gb 7200 HD ?

I don't think so - I may be wrong, but I believe the platters in the drive are approx the same size, but spin at diiferent speeds and have different densities. There may even be more platters as size increases.

But with a 7200 rpm, 60 gb drive available for $138.00, I wouldn't even consider a more expensive (but larger) 5400 rpm hard drive.

Unless I needed the extra 40gb of storage.

You won't notice enough of a performance difference between a 5400 and 7200 in a laptop. Save yourself the cash. Unless you are into some seriously demanding Video editing, demanding gaming, etc.. You really won;t notice the anything but how much faster your money is leaving your wallet. :)

I am a gamer with an M170 and have tried both speeds (5400 and 7200).. The difference is a couple of seconds.

    If you go to http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/06/06/a_new_toshiba_100_gb_notebook_drive_at_5/
for a GREAT article about the exact HD you are looking at.

..and on a side note.. Faster HDD will mean more heat.. which in some laptops can become an issue.

Toshiba Hard drives are absolute junk, don't buy one!

Western Digitals have the best quality, but they don't have anything higher than 5400RPM and 80GB . Hitachi 5k100 is a very nice drive, and for a faster one, the 7k100.

Thanx for all the feedback guys. I've had my Hitachi Travelstar 60GB 7200 for about a year now and I'm very satisfied with it, I just need the extra disk space for my work with audio engineering, and right now i have less than 3GB of space of my HD. I checked out that toms hardware review and i liked what i saw there.....jenson04, I did see that Hitachi 100GB Notebook HD on newegg and was thinkin about it. But I assumed that the Toshiba 100GB was a better choice cause it has a 16MB buffer and the Hitachi Travelstar 100GB has only 8MB, not to mention that the price difference isn't to significant ($10). *shrugs*

Western Digital and Best Quality definately do not belong in the same sentence. I think if you did a little research on that alone, you'd find WD's to be OK at best when it comes to quality. They are more of an economy drive.

I have done research, thank you. I own two WD's, desktop and an external laptop hdd. Best drives I've ever owned.

Everybody has their own opinion, and that's mine. So, if you have a different one, then post it, otherwise, don't attack others for theirs.

If you are running out of drive space, you can upgrade your hard drive and install your old one in a 2.5" hard drive enclosure. That way your laptop has the data/programs you need and the backup is with you for less frequently accessed data.

I installed my 4200 rpm/40gb hd in this Vantec NexStar3 enclosure- AWESOME product!

As far as WD hard drives go, I have had nothing but success with their 3.5' drives.

I just got myself (literally, came back from the distributor's 5 mins. ago) a Fujitsu 100GB 5,400 RPM drive. I don't know that much about fujitsus, other than their performance is so-so and they are really quiet. Reason I bought was that I got an incredible deal on this bad boy. Will post results later.

On a side note, if you're a geek like me DO NOT stand on a room full of goodies for more than 5 minutes. Just saw a wireless laser mouse that was begging me to take him home :p

Agreed, Fujitsu's are some of the quietest drives you can buy. Check out SilentPCReview, they have some hard drive reviews.

Heh hucsman...hence why I do not go into ANY tech store with more than I want to spend...last time I did, I walked into Best Buy, intent on spending $20 for CD's and cases. Well, I walked out spending $187.....yeah..I learned my lesson. :p
