havent noticed a thread on this topic, if there is a large one can i get a link to it ?

looking for a lapdesk-sized passive cooling table for my computer. the left side of the envy gets kind of toasty .... heat will eventually kill the machine over time and i want to get 2-3 yrs of use out of it.

i think i saw an aluminum plate made by thermaltake, but its for 15" books....its got filled tubes underneath to dissipate heat. but need something bigger with room for a mouse.
my wife likes to use the machine on the bed, the fabric blocks all the vents, so i need something that will keep open air flowing umderneath it ....
currently propping the back of the machine up to get more airflow
    any suggestions ?

The following link is a bit jam-packed, but it includes my thoughts on coolers within a Thread on the Envy 17 and its heat.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/484905-official-hp-envy-17-owners-lounge-265.html#post6482134

First, the specific post was prompted by another post mentioning a specific brand and model of cooler. You can follow the internal link to see that unit. My comment describes my cooler (same brand, different model). I offered an internal link to a detailed heat test I conducted of the Envy 17 (with cooler and without cooler, laptop idle and laptop at 99% - 100% CPU, GPU, and Disk). My internal link includes photos of the cooler and the test.

Second, I go off on hovercraft airflow--it was fun--but the comparison was valid.

Third, I still haven't modified the cooler, but I will eventually.

Fourth, there is a lot of nonsense about coolers out there, but they make a difference. Data matters.

Fifth, coolers mean dust cleaning includes coolers, now, along with computer air ports.

Sixth, my cooler has an almost painful bottom to rest on my lap. I intend to cut a 1/4 inch hardboard or plastic sheet and hotmelt glue it to the base of my cooler to make lap use more comfortable. The base is high enough for the cooler air intake to draw from the sides (which is how it works on a table, anyway). I may apply a rubber sheet to the bottom of the board to improve friction. Who wants to watch their favorite computer slide off the bed quilt to the floor below?

Edit: I stumbled on this thread this morning and made this comment, but, in looking it up again tonight, I find that there is a robust thread on the topic here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/accessories/304671-notebook-coolers-buyers-guide.html#post3389293
