    Hi all,

I just bought VAIO VGN-SZ17NP, which came with 512mb memory. I was wondering what kind of memory I should get? I am thinking to put 2 GB in it so I went to Kingston website and I was surprised that for one stick it cost $185, and I think it run on a 266 MHz speed? Is that true?? I thought the new SZ runs on 677mhz. so I really don't know what should I do? I hear a lot of people pay less than that actually they can get pair of 1 GB for that price. Please if anyone can show me where I can get a better price for 2 GB memory sticks for less and with faster speed? I really don't know what kind or brand is compatible with the SZ17NP.

Thank you and waiting for a respond.

    Hello and welcome.

Where did you get the info about 266 MHz? Because that is the wrong type of memory. The onlly type of memory has 266 mhz is the old PC2100. Your laptop is compatible with either PC25300, DDR2-667 mhz or PC24200, DDR2-533.

533MHz, 667Mhz, 400MHz - the speed you see on most RAM is just the effective speeds. The actual clock speeds are lower due to the fact that modern memory are capable of tranferring memory on both the raising and falling edge of the frequency(DDR) thereby doubling their effective performance. From what I remember DDR2 should run at even lower frequency.

For DDR2 533Mhz memory, 266MHz should be the correct I/O frequency. for 667MHz memorythe I/O speed should be 333MHz.

buying memory directly from the manufacturers is not the cheapest way. try an online store like newegg for good prices on memory. just use the manufacturers site to check for specifications and compatibility. brand name does not matter for compatibility, just make sure you get good quality(for that brand name matters) Check out Crucial, Corsair, kingston or OCZ. Most people buy from these companies.
