    Hello world ;)

I want to upgrade memory to 1 GB. Current modules are those preinstalled by Acer and are PC2700. Now, since the CPU is a Pentium M 715 (with 400 MHz FSB) can I put 400 MHz DDR RAM?

    Thanks in advance.

The FSB doesn't have to match the RAM speed, although it is better if it does. There's not a huge difference either way.

I'd buy another PC2700 stick of and put it in alongside one of the 256MB sticks you already have in your laptop for a total of 1.25GB. You can use 400MHz DDR RAM (your FSB is 400MHz), but the RAM will only run as fast as the slowest stick.

I've missed a piece of information: my target configuration is 2 x 512 MB RAM to take advantage of dual channel. My Intel Centrino 715 has a 400 MHz FSB.

Corsair, GeIL and VData build PC3200 400 MHz SO-DIMM DDR modules.

    Thanks for your help

Uhm... Looking for more infos on i855GME chipset, I've found this piece of specs directly by Intel:

The GMCH system memory controller directly supports the following:
    • One channel of PC1600/2100 SO-DIMM DDR SDRAM memory (Intel 855GM GMCH)
    • One channel of PC1600/2100/2700 SO-DIMM DDR SDRAM memory (Intel 855GME
    GMCH)

    So:
    1. no dual channel
    2. buying PC3200 RAM is useless

    Am I wrong?

Hm, you're right. The 855GM can only use DDR333 (PC2700) memory or less. Dual-channel makes no difference anyway; the Pentium M can't make much use of the extra bandwidth it provides.

So, go for PC2700 memory and don't worry about the dual-channel business.

@chaz: The 855GM chipset supports up to 266 MHz. The one supporting 333 MHz is 855GME. Wanted to give a more updated information, as I checked Intel's webpage recently. :)
