I was trying to udgrade memory on Satellite A135-S2276 (Vista). I placed one 1GB in one bank and a 512MB on another. No matter how I placed them (switching the 1 GB from A to B), I always just got a total 1GB. (At least from what was displayed in computer -> properties.) (If I just placed the 1 GB in the lower bank, I also got 1 GB.) From what I read, it seemed that it shouldn't be a problem for this machine if the two chips had different sizes. Could anyone tell me what was my problem? Thanks a lot in advance.

Can you download/run MemTest86+ and see if it finds 1.5GB? Its possible the RAM chip is completely dead.

Also, does CPU-Z see both modules (there should be two options on the SPD page).

As jisaac said, could be. Can you put just the 512MB in? What happens? Is it recognized?

Well it does not look like the memory card is dead, it is more of a Bios/chipset limitation. Try updating the bios, and that should allow your computer to see 1.5gb of memory.

The chips are not dead. I put them in one at a time and they were both perfec.

How do I do bios/chipset updating, if it is the problem?

It may take some time for them to be shown in your system info. I tried doing that once and the 1.5GB showed up in BIOS, but not when I looked at My Computers properties, until a while after installing the RAM in though. It was getting used, just not telling you it was.
