i'm not an expert, but I would go for LG =) I've got a 17" LG Flatron back home, bought about 4 or 5 years ago and even now it's like new, hasn't lost any pixels or brightness.

i heard good things about LG as well.
i was thinking of building a desktop for christmas, and getting a screen before hand to use as an external. then sell my laptop. I can get a mid-range gaming machine for 550 including the monitor in my post right now, e7200, p43, 500gb hdd, hd3850. but I think by early next year, hd4800 refresh should be out, and nehalem might push down the price for c2d.

it's ok. In that price range you are best to look up close if you want to find the best. LG, Samsung etc... they are all TN panels in the low cost monitors. Good for gaming but the colour will be meh compared to *VA or IPS panels. If it fits your budget, go for it.

thanks! I'll go to some other online dealers and see if I can get a better deal on the LG.
is there any difference between vga and dvi at that resolution?

I don't know, maybe not? I tend to be rather picky with screens and displays.

I read that it would be come an issue when you go high res, due to low bandwidth and all the digital-analog converting. can anyone tell me how does it actually look?

Yes the digital signal gets converted to analog when you use VGA and is downgraded. At hi-res I suppose it will look somewhat artifacted and/or pixely. You might find something on youtube? But it is going to be very subjective. What monitor, what resolution(s) etc...

If you are not used to viewing high quality/sharp monitor outputs, you will most likely not notice the loss in quality caused by the VGA interface.

Not in my opinion. If you have high quality VGA output it can easily drive 1680*1050.

My Asus laptop on VGA gives a just as crisp picture on my 22" LCD as several DVI systems I have tried. Only the VAIO Z in my signature delivers a better picture through HDMI.

So a lot depends on the quality of the output signal.

tianxia, I'd go for a 22" 1680*1050 LCD. The LG you mentioned seems nice but it does not have any digital input. Which is not very future proof.

I guess I'll have to look for a monitor with both dvi and vga then. or a vga to dvi adapter.

tianxia, I purchased the dell e2408wfp screen a few months ago for about $320 and it has a 1920x1200 native resolution, 24" size, it has dvi and vga and it looks really nice.
If you have the budget for it, it is definitely a great bang for the buck screen.

Dell may have it cheap for the upcoming holidays, so it may be worth looking at.
Their were a few Samsung 22" screens up on Tiger direct for pretty cheap, you may want to look into them. The only problem is probably shipping to Europe. You may have to buy from a European computer store to avoid ridiculous shipping costs.

The new problem with Dell is that they are bumping up the prices of their foreign stores so that they can afford to sell stuff cheaper in their US store. As a result, Dell panels are excellent value for money in the US, but extremely overpriced in countries such as the UK, and this is not likely to change anytime soon.
This same strategy is also being adapted by Apple, which is a shame.
