i am interested in SAMSUNG Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200 RPM which is only $64 at newegg with free shipping. it gets good rates from buyers.

whether it has hard drive protection sensor?
my notebook is sony z540 that has hdd protection function.
i mean, the sensor of hdd protection is in the hard drive itself or outside of hard drive?

i want to upgrade my z540's hdd from Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM to SAMSUNG Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200 RPM, whether it is worth to upgrade it?

    thanks

The Samsung doesn't have the sensor, your Z does so that's good.

The WD5000bevt is relatively fast for a 5400rpm drive. You'll get some improvement with the Samsung but it won't be that much.

If you want a more significant improvement get the Seagate Momentus XT.

i am not sure whether the sensor of hdd protection of my z540 is in the hdd itself or outside of the hdd, so if my z is upgraded to a new hdd without a sensor of hdd protection, whether my z still has the function of protection.

    thanks

As far as I know the sensor is built into the Vaio Z. You have software controlling it right?

    yes,there is hdd protection driver.
so, you mean, the sensor is built in my z, my z will have the hdd protection function regardless of the new hdd has sensor intergated or not, am i right?

    thanks

so, you mean, if there is sensor intergrated in hdd, that will not need a software to support the hdd protection function.

if the sensor is not intergrated in hdd, then z will need software to support the hdd protection function.

    am i right?

    Yes and yes

But if you have a sensor and software support, would it be double protection or would they cancel each other out?

People have said that having two sensors (one in the laptop, one in the HDD) can cause problems.

I'm assuming the Sony one is like the Toshiba and HP hard drive protection software?
