Ok so i need some help. I have been looking everywhere for a new DVD/RW drive for my 1720 because mine just stopped reading any kind of disks. I have done alot too clean it the proper way but i just can't seem to get it to work so now i have to get a new one. The only problem is i can't seem to find a new one. I can only find used and refurbished ones. Can anyone help me out here. I don't know what i am doing wrong. Maybe i just don't know the proper websites to go to. Any help would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance

you can use nearly any drive of your preference. It's a standard item.

i know i can get like a cd rom drive, cd/rw drive, dvd cd/rw, and a dvd/rw cd/rw drive. I am looking for someone to give me a couple of websites where i can buy a dvd/rw drive for my 1720. Thanks

Here is a link to a site where you ccan buy a Pioneer DVR-k17 laptop dvd burner:
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=AA68010&CartID=done&nextloc=
It burns cd, dvd's, and dual layer dvd's.
I hope this is what you are looking for

will the Pioneer DVR-k17 dvd burner fit into my inspiron 1720?

I can't think of a reason it won't fit, assuming the 1720 uses a standard slimline burner. Get the model number of the existing burner from Device Manager and then Google for the specs.
There's some more slimline burners at Newegg.
This thread may provide some useful guidance.

tray loading is starting to bother me -

I bought the external Samsung SE-T084L and pulled it apart and stuck the bare drive into my notebook. However, it got removed after one incident when I had to get out the screwdriver and dismantle the burner when it refused to spit out a disc.
Other possibilites are the UJ-875, Pioneer DVR-K06 and the Liteon SLW-831S.
However, I definitely want 8cm disc support and preferably Lightscribe. Many of the slot loaders don't tick those boxes and, after my need to get out the screwdriver, I will stick with tray loading for a while longer.

john thanks for the response... i looked up the dvd+rw drive and it is: TSST CORP DVD+RW TS-L632D. I have looked on this website and there is 179 posts about it. But can't seem to find out if my inspiron 1720 uses a standard slimline burner. I have tried googling it but not to swift on the google search thing. If you could or anyone please tell me if this laptop uses a standard slimline burner. Also on a post i was reading, they said they called dell and they replaced the dvd+rw because of the problems with the drive. I don't have dells number. I am currently deployed and can't seem to get a number to dell besides the number to dell if i was calling from the united kingdom. All help is greatly appreciated. I can't play my new games if i don't have a drive.... its killing me. Thanks again

The TS-L632D is an absolutely standard slimline burner. I've have close encounters it or other members of its family.
As for contacting Dell, you could try the email support on this page. Explain the problem and your location and perhaps give them a number where they can contact you.
You can find the service manual for the 1720 h ere and it shows here how to replace the optical drive.

thanks for the reply john. Awesome to know that i have some choices in a new dvd+rw drive. K-Tron suggested Pioneer DVR-k17, is this a good one? I very knowledgeable in the network field of computers but not too much on the hardware. Please advise which dvd+rw would be a good choice

Wait, why don't you warranty it and ask for a different brand? thats what I did and it worked out for me. The TSST corp drive that came in mine was complete crap and failed after about 4 weeks. Oddly enough they told me they were out of different brands, but sent me a different brand anyways.

Dell usually ships with TSST, or Toshiba Samsung Storage Technologies drives. They are 90% of the time, really bad drives. I have upgrade the optical drive in my dell e1505 to a dvr-k17, and it was a really nice drive. It does dual layer and everything. Basically its the best drive for less than $100.

so i went to the website .mwav and looked at the dvr-k17 and it doesn't look like it will fit into my bay for my cd drive. On the cd drive i have in my computer, the outside is bent a little or rounded kind of and on one side there is a kinda like a lip and the dvr-k17 is the same size left to right. I need to find one that is normal size on the left and has the lip/smaller side on the right. Does this make sense????

Standard optical drives come with a plain flat fascia plate which is held on by some plastic hooks. Notebook manufacturers often fit their own fascia to suit the notebook design. In my experience the fascias are inter-changeable (just don't break the hooks). There are some photos in this thread.
