soo my vaio had 2gb of ram. i was wondering if i can upgrade that to 4gb. i know the 2gb is really 2 1gb sticks, so can i just take those out and change them to 2 2gb sticks? and if not can i take out 1 of the 1gb sticks and replace it with a 2gb to make 3gb total?

please give me some info on this stuff. i dont know too much about ram. and also is there a tech article some where on how exactly to do it?

    any info is appreciated guys.

3 GB is normally the best option, particularly, if you have a 32-bit OS. Adding 4 GB will result in ommision of some of the RAM. The OS will not be able to use a large chunk of the 4 GB, only 3 to 3.5 GB can be used.

Some notebooks are limited to a maximum of 2 GB of RAM, but this can be often be changed by means of a BIOS update, to a higher value. Which notebook do you have?

Yeah, you should be able to upgrade your RAM to 3 GB or 4 GB... but it may void your warranty (if you are still under one).

I think its unlikely that it will void the warranty. These days,, manufacturers expect end users to perform simple changes, such as RAM upgrades.

On the underside of the notebook will be a panel which, underneat, houses the RAM modules. The FZ has two such panels. The RAM should be under the one which is dead centre. Once you remove the panel, you should get access to the RAM modules.

Removing them is a simply procedure. I have linked the user manual to the FZ series below:

    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/Notebooks/FZ3/FZ3_H_EN.pdf

Pages 106 through to 111 outline the process of installing new RAM.
