    here is the situation:

i heard that 7200RPM hard drives are faster than 5400RPM (at the expense of heat and power, tho not much) and they are generally better for gaming and video editing (which i do for a hobby, no professional thing)

so the sony vaio sr has a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM (thats all i know)

but there is the seagate model that has

    1. 500GB
    2. 7200RPM
    3. 16MB (sth)
    4. 3Gbmp (or sth)

if price was not the factor (they're basiclly the same) should i upgrade the sony hard drive with the seagate?

what are the benefits from the seagate?

will there really be a huge difference between 7200RPM and 5400RPM in video edition, and gaming (what about hd movie watching?)

will there be a big battery time reduction in the 7200RPM compared to the 5400RPM?

Good upgrade and go ahead. The new drive is faster and newer and most probably uses less power than ur old drive...

really it would use "less" power...from what i read in various forums...

7200RPM hard drives use more power...

its probably because since its faster, when it's spinning, it takes the information it needs before spinning back down.

The amount of time it stays spinning would be less then the amount of time a 5400rpm would be spinning, thus using less power

    hmmm...that makes sense...

is seagate momentus a good brand?
is it preferable over the hard drives that sony ship with?

It would help to know what model of drive is currently in your Vaio. Then we will decide.

No don't get the Seagate 7200.4. The WD5000BEVT is just as fast while it's cheaper, uses less power and makes less noise. See: http://techreport.com/articles.x/17010/1

If you want a fast 500GB 7200rpm you'll have to wait for Hitachi Travelstar 7K500.

He doesn't have to wait for the hitachi its already out buy expensive... the Western digital one is the best option... also a newer 7200RPM Drive is usually more power efficient than an old 5400RPM drive because of newer tech and less platters...

A 500GB/5400RPM drive isn't necessarily an old drive. Many of them are made not too long ago. They're fairly fast and competitive with current 7200RPM drives like the WD3200BEKT and the Momentus 7200.4's.
