hd do really get hot specially if it works double time due to multi-tasking not withstanding that you have a fast cpu and lots of ram. the spinning does emit a lot of kinetic energy. if the nhc warning annoys you, you can raise the threshold of the hd temperature before it starts to flash you that it is getting hot or you can switch-off the warning option altogether so that it would no longer flag you. of course another possibility is to power down your machine by choosing dynamic switching even when using AC power, and Battery optimized when in battery mode. you can also opt to enable spin down but this would certainly affect machine performance if you are doing resource critical tasks or using resource hungry softwares in battery mode.

57 is too hot. My HDD will turn off the laptop at 56 (it has happened twice).
Is the HDD Toshiba? I think these are the worst laptop hard drives, but this is what I have in my l2000.

It's not the problem of the harddrive.
But it's the design problem of your
    notebook. Because it's a Dell means CR@PS.
Buy better brand name notebook next time...!

I have a Sony Vaio S5 serie laptop and it has a
"FUJITSU MHV2080BH" hard drive. Its temperature is around 38-40 C. However I am looking for a cooler one around 35C, but after this thread I understood that it is hard to achieve such a thermal value

i have a toshiba ntbk hd installed in my Asus Desknote D1 (2003 release). i can confirm that it does get pretty hot but manageable. the whole machine in fact can become too hot for comfort that i never use it on my lap. well what do you expect? the desknote uses a desktop P4 cpu (pre P4 mobile).

If your temp is 57, you're probably okay as long as the temperature isn't constantly that high. If you want to bring your temps down, you might want to consider a cooling pad. My Coolermaster Notepal lowers my HD temps by 7-10 degrees.

Speaking of bad dell designs my notebook not only runs incredibly hot but the fans are loud as hell and to repair/replace you have to remove the mobo!

You should be fine my HD (hitachi-they're all hot) will run 50-60c always. In my experience fujitsu HD's are nice and cool. try controlling your fans and such to keep your machine cooler and also consider as the others said a cooling pad.

Just a quick question for all of you.

What is spin down, and should I have it enabled?

I seen this option in NHC but I never enabled it because I could find no information on it. So I gave up and asked. Thanks.

spin down = switching off the HDD when not in use. In windows XP I have yet to see this actually happen becuase windows accesses the drive every few seconds and prevents it from idling for a long enough period to spin down

The info I want to say is, the Fujitsu HDD have no problem.
My HDD in my notebook is also made by fujitsu.
The real problem is the Design of Dell. So the thread starter
don't need to go for the wrong direction, thinking the
HDD have problem. Maybe it's mine or your problem
that you can't catch my meaning!

My old Dell D505 is a mystery...probably not...but the temps vary quite a bit.

For instance, my CPU will stay between 25-35 no matter what the notebook is doing. However, the HD will go up to and beyond 55 after a couple hours of use. Why?? I don't care, I'm getting rid of it by the summer anyway :)

It seems that specifically the e1505/6400 has a bad HD cooling design. Not all Dell's are like this though, so you shouldn't make such brash generalizations. There probably wouldn't have been a problem with your first post if you had left this part out:
Asus actually has this design flaw in several of their notebooks, but it doesn't make all their notebooks bad and that Asus is "CR@PS".
