A friend has given me an HP ze5170. The power connector was shattered, so replaced it with a new one, powered up the machine and noticed only 1 fan on that heatsink was working. I metered the mainboard and saw it was getting its +5v and saw that the sticker on the fan itself was discolored. My question is if there is anyone out there who knows of a place I can order just the fan and not the entire heatsink with fans? (Looking down at the board, it is the fan on the top). Also I am looking for the a cover piece over the LCD screen; part number BL1A265. I have seen it for the ze5300 but want to make sure it will work before I order it. Thanks in advance.

I know nothing about this notebook but want to make sure you actually have the problem you think you do. I read you checked the power. Run Prime95 (free). Stress it and see if fan fires up. If the part # matches it should work that is why they have part #'s. And will HP not sell you the fan?

I haven't tried contacting HP about it as I have had horrible service with them in the past and normally I can find parts for it on eBay or other sites for cheaper than what the manufacturer offers. I forgot to mention there was the secondary fan that was also not working. I metered that and it wasn't getting any voltage. I found a replacement board for cheap and am waiting for it to arrive. But with my electronics background and seeing the burnt sticker on the fan itself, I am more than sure that it will not come back on. I wasn't aware stress testing was able to turn a fan on. Thanks for the insight. The number on the fan that is bad is CF0540-B08H-C006 .

Use that number to find the part. From what you originally posted it is clear you know more about electronics than I. But thought stressing and increasing the load (thermal stress) would maybe see if the system worked. I do not know where you tested voltage from (wanted to rule out) and thought of a situation like I believe a relay works where a current controls another. I thought you might be correct but the test I made costs nothing and actually diagnostically would be a better preliminary test. But good luck. On HP having bad support I can't comment on them but I know what you are thinking. I would think maybe ordering parts is very different, as it is black and white, not like my computer has this problem, Why? Best of luck, hope it goes smooth.

I found the part but it is $30 on backorder. Only thing left to do is call HP. Thanks for the feedback.
