Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, Iomega, SimpleTech, LaCie. I'd go with one of the first three brands. They're reputable, reliable and offer good value.

I use an ATMT. It was quite cheap and is about 2 years old but sill going strong! The light packed in a few weeks ago but I think after that long it's allowed!

AFAIK there are a handful of hard drive manufacturers so while the enclosure may have a name, the hard drive inside is just as important if not even more.

I really like this Seagate 500GB Freeagent 7200RPM 8MB buffer external harddrive I bought from Frys. It's very sturdy and has good build quality.

I concur. I recently had the opportunity to use a Seagate FreeAgent HD, and I like it.
