so i have no idea how to buy an external hard disk. the one we had somehow isnt accessible anymore. dont know if that problem can be fixed but i would still like to buy one anyway. so is there something i need to look out when buying one, any tips or recommendation which ones are good? and if possible not too expensive but still reliable?

does it come up with an error that says the drive letter isnt accessible anymore? if so, right click on the external drive and click on explore...it should work, as i have the same problem with my 1TB western digital external drive.

Most major brands are reliable (WD, Sandisk, Maxtor, etc). Are you using it between work and school/home? Are you using it between different computers often?

I bought a WD Passport (2) and a Toshiba (1). They run off of power from the USB, as opposed to an external plug. That is my preference since I travel with them.

@diablo85: ok, will ask my sis because i myself dont know. at that time she was the only one using it and said that it suddenly didnt work anymore.

@titaniummd: we would only be using it for lappy and pc at home. what do you mean with the second question, doesnt an external hard disk work on every pc? and is there a difference between one you only use at home and one you take for traveling?

oky i asked my sis, she said it was too long ago she doesnt remember, just that it didnt even start.. anyway i think i ll go with buying an external enclosure.. i did some research and have few questions.
    1) how do i know if the pc or lappy has a esata connector?
    2) if i understood correctly firewire is slower than esata. would there be a price difference between those two?
    3) i read that the enclosure must be made for the type of hard drive it will contain. so i first choose which hdd i want and then search which enclosure fits?
    4) between seagate, wd and hitachi which one is cheaper or are they almost same price, and which doenst drain too much power.. we will prolly only use it for backup so i think the noise, cooler factor isnt so important..

and sry if some of the questions are really stupid >>
