Well, first of all, anything with an older Atom processor is going to be slow regardless. It's just a slow processor. However, you can upgrade from 1GB to 2GB memory by purchasing a 2GB DDR2 SODIMM module.

When you take the bottom cover off, the inside should look roughly like this:
    900x900px-LL-d65664d7_DSC00455.jpeg

The memory goes in the slot near the lower right. You pop the clips on each side and the existing memory will pop out to a 45 degree angle. Then put in the new memory in the same angle and push down flat until it clicks. Then put the cover back on and that's it!

My 1980's calculator watch is faster than an N450. Unless you have the RAM for free, don't bother, it won't make a lick of difference. You will have to remove the existing 1GB RAM module and replace with a 2GB because there is very likely only one RAM slot. You can't change anything else on it because it's all soldered. It will be 2GB DDR2 667MHz So-DIMM. Make sure its a SODIMM for a laptop like this: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC2-5300-200-Pin-Notebook-CT25664AC667/dp/B000F7QRTG

If you want a compact no frills laptop look for an Acer Aspire Switch 10 for less than $300. Will run circles around that Atom.

Joy - are you open to purchasing another computer? As the previous poster said, even a $300 notebook would do wonders for you.

If you must stick with your current computer, upgrading to 2GB of RAM would be helpful. It'd also be a good idea to wipe the computer's drive clean and reinstall the operating system, though you'll need to back up all your files before you do that. Reinstalling the operating system will make the computer run more efficiently (less resource usage).

hallo Charles P. Jefferies, honestly, i dont have plan to purchase a new laptop. Besides of my Emachines laptop, I have my Lenovo already which is intel core i7,8gb memory and 500gb hdd..... But this emachine is my old laptop and I bought it last 2010. Then until now , it is still ok but yah it is very slow. I was think that, I have to upgrade it, if it is possible.I just want to make it something better.... And it is very small I like to bring it wherever I go unlike my big laptop so heavy....

Thank you very much and I really appreciate your opinion... I try it to upgrade into new memory as soon as possible ... :) :) :)

Understood - I didn't realize you had another computer.

In that case, I'd suggest the following:
--Look at the memory that HTWingNut provided a link to in post #5. Upgrading to 2GB of RAM will help performance.
--Reinstall the operating system. This will probably do the most for you, performance-wise.

Do you think you'd be comfortable reinstalling the operating system? We could help you with this process.

Yeah if you've had it a while, a clean install of xp would do wonders.

XP is so ugly and old... And it's not only OS itself but also modern software dragging you down. I believe the only way to go is install some light Linux distro. That Atom piece of junk performs worse than Pentium M back from 2003, if I recall correctly.

I'd also suggest using what the computer came with, in your case, Windows 7 Starter. Did the computer come with restore CD's?

joyweb, the word is torrent. When you search for something on the web, add it to the end of search string and enjoy the magic. =\

p.s. I hope this post will be deleted by mods after being read by topic starter. =/

The method Starlight5 mentioned to get a Windows disc carries some risk ...you were warned. ;)

It's possible (and likely) your notebook has a recovery partition with the Windows software on it. The Disk Manager will tell you if there are any 'hidden' partitions on the storage drive. Bring up a Run prompt by pressing the [Windows] + [R] keys simultaneously, type diskmgmt.msc in the box and then press [Enter]. It will take a few seconds for the window to load and then you'll see your storage drive (Disk 0). It will be separated into at least two parts, 'System Reserved', and '(C :)'. If there's another one there, tell us about it. It's probably the recovery partition.

I remember putting an SSD I won in a contest in my 2010-era netbook a few years ago and upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium, in addition to installing 2GB memory. Despite all that, it was still slow, all thanks to the processor.

An easy way to install Windows on a system without an optical (DVD) drive is to take the ISO and put it on a USB drive with the Windows 7 USB DVD download tool (free from Microsoft). The easiest way to do this for Linux distributions is via Pen Drive Linux.

Check for the presence of the recovery partition like I noted before because if it's there, that makes restoring the computer to factory settings pretty easy (usually). You might have to press a combination of keys at startup to begin the system recovery. Check the owner's manual if you still have it - otherwise the manual should be available online.
