i just got a dvi compatible monitor and i was wondering how much of a difference going from vga to dvi would make for just everyday tasks such as web browsing, watching movies, etc.

Assuming we're talking about LCDs here I say go with DVI. My mother connects her LCD with VGA and my monitor is connected with DVI, I would say there is a noticeable difference though there might not always be if the VGA signal is high quality as is the cable.

If you have the option of using DVI go with it, as it avoids the digital -> analogue -> digital conversion you'll get using VGA. You'll notice the most improvement on areas of sharp contrast, especially text.
