So i'm getting a Thinkpad X61, no optical drive. I was ready to spend the 80 or so dollars to pay for one of those slim, travel usb dvd drives when i realized what if theres an ide to usb adapter.

Well there is, here's an example from newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156101

and regular internal drives are around 30 bucks or less.

You guys think this will work? Is this a common hack already for all you ultra portable guys? or should i say ultra-portable-and-cheap guys? :)

Something like this. (You'll need a separate cable)

I guess the above will also work, if it has a slim-line port.

might be good for certain situations, but you can always rip your CD/DVD to ISO's, and "mount" them using DAEMON Tools

    HI guys,

So it worked. Got a cheap internal dvd-rom drive and ide/sata to usb2.0 adapter and it worked like a charm. Ugly-as-hell setup but it works and its just staying on my work desk.

And speedwise this solution should faster than an integrated optical drive.
With my integrated DVD drive it takes 40-50 minutes to burn a DVD at 8x, with a USB and an desktop DVD drive (5.25") it takes about 8-9 minutes. It also cheaper to replace.
