Well, on friday I accidentally dropped my hp2000dv. The screen seemed to be frozen so I just manually shut it off and back on. but this didn't help, as the screen won't turn on at all. I just have a question, before i try to get it replaced, I had a lot of pictures in it. that's my most important concern, because i had been saving them and was about to burn em into a disc but then this incident happened. Please help me in any way, I will do anything to get them back. thanx and hopefully there will be a solution.

P.S. When I turn it on, the hard drive doesn't seem to run or turn on. I'm sure you guys have heard of this matter before so please help me up.

    What you could do:

Take out the hard drive, put it in a regular PC with a 2.5" to 3.5" coverter. Maybe then you could still save your data. Or if you have another notebook, just put it in there.

    Good luck!

If you want to pay, you can get an external 2.5" USB 2.0 enclosure for about $25 from newegg.com, which makes it much easier to do that. Good luck with the recovery, hopefully the repairs don't cost much.

ok, well i wouldnt mind getting that 2.5" usb or takin off the hard drive, but i dont really get both options. Im not a computer geek so be patient with me guys. Ok NOTEBOOK SOLUTIONS when u say that, does the hard drive just come off easily? will it affect the warranty of my product? because I bought it at sams and got the 2 year warranty for it, so they probably will exchange it. But you know how sometimes they have little seals inside of them so you won't be able to open it. Please explain this to me a little more detailed. thanx a lot for the response, sorry for being stupid and not knowing about all this, willing to learn tho.

PITABRED: what is this usb thing at newegg for? I mostly have the most important things uner My Documents, thats where all my pictures and videos are. i wouldn't mind getting this USB, especially if it will work for sure and I won't have to break the little warranty seal. thanx alot for the responses I greatly appreciae it, keep up the good work guys.

Pitabred is suggesting you take the HD out of your laptop and put it into an enclosure. Then plug it into a desktop or another laptop to see whether it works. Or try Tinderbox's suggestion. No real alternatives as your screen sounds like its dead; connection broken or soemthing

Does the laptop turn on? Or is there no activity whatsoever when you push the power button?

the computer does turn on, but it doesn't seem to run anything, because I cannot hear the fan or the HD working. thanx for the replies, I hope to find a solution to this.

P.S. Does it take long to take off the HD? do I need any special tools? will I break the warranty seal?

Worst case, you broke something inside your HDD, which means it'll be very hard to retrieve data off it. On the other hand, if it's just the power connection between the hard drive and motherboard, then go with the previous suggestions to put your hard drive into a USB external enclosure and bring it over to a friend's house to see. It'll act like a really large USB thumb-drive, and you can then move all the necessary data off it.

Seeing as how you say you cannot hear the fan or HDD working, it's not a screen problem.

Most likely you damaged the drive. If you take it in for warranty they may wipe your drive.
Try to get it fixed under warranty but make sure they don't format your drive.

If that fails you can get the external enclosure (goto newegg.com and search 'usb 2.5 external enclosure'). After putting the drive in the case see if you can get your files on another computer.

If that fails you can find someone to open your drive and check the platters and mag arm. I DO NOT recommend doing this yourself, it needs to be in a clean environment by someone who knows what to look for.

I wish you luck but I fear they are gone.

I dont think its the drive that died...well at least the symptoms dont suggest an actual dead drive. If the drive died the computer will still be able to turn on so you still have some hope left.

alrite alrite keep bringin up ideas. I am about to try and get it out rite now, but there are so many possibilities. ok so, once i get the hard drive out, which i believe is the spot with the little disc signs (3 on top of each other). I just disconnect it, take it to any other computer and insert it in there? once i do this will the computer i run it in work the same? is it hard to find a computer that can fit that HD? Where can I put all of my files? or where am i gonna save them? let me know, I am really goin to do this, with the help of all you experts. thanx i really really appreciate it, I am thinking that it is not that big of an issue too, because when I dropped it. the screen was still on it just looked like it froze or an error. then I turned it back on and it worked, the only thing is that the screen was just plain dead, I could hear the fan and the HD doin their job, but after I tried about 2 times the HD and Fan just stopped working. So now I'm just with the option of lookin at the quick touch blue buttons and the rest of the physical lights.

anybody know if the laptop has any warranty seals or stuff like that before i open it? Also does the product that im supposed to get from newegg support my type of computer? I just don't want to try fixing it and have the guys at SAMS Club not make my warranty valid. Because I got the 2 year warranty on it, and I am just afraid that it will have security or warranty seals, and they will not make my warranty valid because of that. thank you...

Any of them will do, just take one of the cheapest for 6-7$. They are fine.

Have you dropped your lappy when it was on or off?

Start>My Computer. You will see all your disks/partitions there. Click on the icon corresponding to your external disk (the one you plug via USB enclosure). If you see it and the files on it you are done!

Do you have two usb cables connected with your HDD enclosure? Have you connected both to your PC?

Is your windows installation OK, so that it mounts external memory sticks and like without problem (it should), so you see them in Start>My Computer.

If both answers are yes, it may mean that you need a professional help with your data on HDD.

PS: Check if you have properly inserted your HDD into the enclosure, that all the contacts are OK... just in case.

So is there any other alternative I can take? I don't mind paying a little extra to get my files out of that disk. it does seem to work, as soon as i plug it into the converter it starts running, but I cannot access my files. thanx for all the replies, and I hope I haven't lost my files. :(
