I'm thinking of buying this as a replacement for my hard drive:
    http://www.addonics.com/products/flash_memory_reader/ad44midecf.asp
however it is 10mm in height. i understand laptops take 9.5mm as standard, will this extra 0.5mm make a difference? I'll probably try software raid with 2 compact flash cards in xp. How well does software raid work ? e.g. If i used 2 cards, each with a read speed of 40mb/s what can i expect to achieve with software raid?

Chances are it won't fit. 0.5mm doesn't sound like a lot, but it is.

there is a tin box to unscrew from the underside of the PCB with the hard drive inside, perhaps i can for go the enclosure and just connect it directly- is this possible?

jisaac, I know you have had lots of questions about this cf to ide thing, and the most amazing thing happened last week. I was looking through the basement and my brother actually has one of them.
I am going to get some pics up with actual dimensions.
I just took dimensions and pictures, and the adapter is not 9.5mm thick or 10mm thick. I am getting about 9.6mm thick. It is only slightly thicker than a standard harddrive. I can slide about 2 pieces of paper between the harddrive and the ruler, which I was using as a straight edge. The difference in height is very minimal.
It will fit into your laptop, I would not worry about it at all.

    here are some pictures:

    I hope this helps you.
There is indeed one pin missing, so you dont have to cut anypins off or anything like that.
Here are the links, cause I dont want to take a whole page up with images.

Just don't forget to buy CF cards that can work in 'fixed disk' mode if you want them to work as hard drive!

    jisaac,
if the fraction of a millimeter prevents the drive from fitting, you can always sand down the cf card a little. Theis is actually quite a bit of plastic around it, you can easily sand off 0.5 mm from the side of the cf card.

However, I doubt you will have any problems with it fitting.

If you need any more pics, pm me, and I can send you more.
