iv'e just been on the phone to a guy at dell and he says if i by a m1710 xps notebook with a go 7900 gs today that it will be future proof and compatible with the 8600m gt and 8700m or 8800m or whatever the'll call em when they come out. Also he says it is capable of vist memory boost via usb pen are all these facts true? iv'e seen posts about santa rosa and got the idea that the current mother board in a xps couldn't suport a dx10 card am i being lied to or just confused? (he was offering tempting deals!)

You can use Vista Readyboost with a USB stick on every computer that runs vista and has a USB 2.0 port. This has nothing todo with Santa Rosa. However Santa Rosa added Turbo Memory (Robson) where the flash is build in so you dont need an extrnal device and I think the flash in Turbo Memory is faster then any USB stick.

I dont think anybody will be able to answer the graphic card question. Dell should know best and they are the onlyone that might know. There is nothing in the current XPS that makes it incompatable to directx10 cards so it might work. But I think the new GPUs will cost alot to upgrade. I think it is risky. The 8600M GT is out but it is hardly an upgrade. I dont think even Dell has seen a final version of the 8700M/8800M so I dont think they can say with 100% certainty that it is compatable.

wave is correct. Its very difficult to say whether DX10 cards will be supported for use in the XPS M1710. The 8600M Gt could be an upgrade, but the difference in performance between an 8600M GT and Go 7900 GS small. Price is another big factor, because newer cards aren't going to be cheap. The best thing to do is wait a while, and see what Dell comes up with. Dell normally announce their notebooks and then start shipping fairly quickly, and since alot of manufacturers have almost made the move to their newer notebook ranges, Dell shouldn't be far behind.

Evasham micros are selling a 17" 8600gt laptop for under £1200 but tell me the gpu is intergrated into the motherboard and cant be upgraded at a later date. Im not sure if thats them keeping shtum on mxm but if it is oops they just lost a customer!
Budget is one of the main reasons why im intersted in getting a 7900 gs I think i probably wont be able to afford a laptop with a 8700m/8800m when ever they materialise. However a year down the line when the cards come down in price if the notebooks upgradeable then way hey :) It will fit my budget to upgrade.

I think those Dell guys work on comission and will say anything to make you buy something right now and with them.

Evesham didnt lie :p they said it cant be upgraded which I bet is 100% true.

Any sales person is going to tell you what you want to hear in order to make a sale. These are the same people that told me the GMA950 could run current games at decent settings when I purchased my last notebook from them a year ago...

If you want to future proof for DX10, wait until DX10 cards are in notebooks. Do not count on an upgrade, even though the E1705 is upgradeable.

If i were you and have a sudden felt of evil, i would do the below:
    1) Record down his claims
    2) His name

Buy the thing and screw him up....

(This is really a bad thing to do....)

Ah as fortold eveshame say "the graphics are modular in our voyager series but we canot guaranty compatibility with unreleased hardware" it would seem they don't have any dedicated 8600m gt yet i guess. :(
