Hey i was wondering if anyone knew what kind of performance gain would a core duo processor / core solo give vs. a pentium M. And also how big of an impact of performance would the the 64bit windows Vista be when running on a pentium M than on intel cores becasuse the core solo/core duo are 64-bit right?

Core solo not as much, Core duo, significant.

The Core Duo processor is NOT 64-bit, however there will be an AMD processor out very soon called Turion X2 that will be both 64BIT and Multithreaded.

The CPU is one factor which will determine your notebook's speed. Hard drive speed, and speed and amount of memory will also have a big effect on system performance. Anything CPU intensive, the Core Duo will be faster. It really depends on what you are doing.

Thanks guys that was really helpful. So why doest intel start making a mobile 64-bit processor?

Because... I don't know, they wanted Core Duo to come out before Turion X2 so they just made it multithreaded, but not 64-bit. That's my guess.

They are, it is called Merom. It will not be released until later in the year though. Merom is the mobile version of Conroe. I believe it will still be dubbed Core Duo.

So which one do people recommend? Duo Core or pM for gaming?

What does a 2.0 pM compared as to a p4 and Athlon?

Core Duo for gaming, as far as I know there isn't an enormous difference in gaming, but Core Duo will improove on other aspects of the computer.

A 2.0 PM is about equivalent to a 3.6GHz P4 except it'll produce a lot less heat and it'll consume a lot less power. I prefer the PM for gaming over the P4.

In single threaded applications like most (morrowind I believe uses one core to help load the next area) games there will be NO difference, in multithreaded aps (these will be getting more common) there will be a large difference.

I'd go with whatever laptop had a better GPU for gaming.

I agree with chazman, if you're into games, get a better GPU not CPU as most CPUs these days are all powerful as heck, so it isn't as much of a concern about which CPU to get; excluding the whole 64-bit/dual core talk.

Another reason why I believe these manufacturers are releasing core duos before 64-bit and just releasing products one at a time is of course marketing reasons. For profit, North American market likes to milk everything for everything they're worth before releasing something new. I like how AMD doesn't do this too much since they have to compete with Intel, but lately it seems like they're surpassing Intel; at least in the desktop processor race.

    Cheers,
    Mike

If you have two systems with same GPU, and have the choice of a Pentium M, or Core Duo, Core Duo is the better choice. As mentioned before, if gaming is a priority, you should be more concerned with the GPU than anything else...

As far as CPU's go, in a notebook, Core Duo is the cat's pajamas.
