Core Duo or Core 2 Duo

What is the difference between the two ? wich one is 'newer' ???

no need to point me to long article, just a quick answer will do

 

Core 2 Duo is more powerful,but consumes slightly more power and therefore runs a bit hotter.Core 2 Is faster,somehow like this :
1.86 Duo almost = 1.66 Core 2 Duo
And the higher models (T7200 have their cache doubled to 4MB which increases the performance further)
But keep in mind Core Duo is cheaper now.

 

Core 2 Duo is newer. It is a 64-bit processor, capable of running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

 

Core 2 is faster because of design improvments, as mujtaba indicated.

Core 2 is also a 64-bit processor, whereas Core Duo is 32 bit. This makes the chip more future proof, as Vista can support 64 bit CPUs and 64 bit programs. XP Home/MCE/Pro only supports 32 bit.

Core 2 has several new instructions and abilities that can greatly increase performance with media related applications. You may or may not notice a difference.

Core 2 usually uses just a little more power than Core Duo but the difference is barely noticeable.

Core Duo is not priced lower than Core 2. The chips are currently selling at the same price per clock (Core Duo 2.0GHz price = Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz price).

 

Core 2 Duo is the newer process and it's said to find about 20% increase in performance from the Core Duo.
Core 2 Duo be 64 bit in comparison with the Core Duo which is 32 bit. The upcoming Operating System, Windows Vista, seems to be making a move to support 64 bit even further.
So if u want to future proof ur comp, then get the Core 2 Duo.

anna21, you don't want long articles but how about a table from Intel with a comparison of processor features? According to the document, the main features of the two processors are virtually identical. If you already have a computer with a Core Duo processor you don't gain much from an upgrade. If you are looking for a new computer, on the other hand, you should get a Core 2 Duo, as others have pointed out.

 

thanks alot for this, how do i know wich processor have 4MB cache and wich one have 2 on the lenovo website ?

 

I think ones that are T5*** have 2mb and T7*** have 4mb level 2 cache.

The Core 2 Duo processors are labeled as the "T5x00" and "T7x00". The "T5x00" models come with 2 MB of shared L2 cache, and the "T7x00" models come with 4 MB of shared L2 cache. All of them are 64-bit processors.
