Does anyone know anything about the buzzing sound encountered in HP and Dell core 2 duo laptops? I have the problem and RightMark CPU clock when checked " Run HLT command when OS is idle" option seems to repair it. But I can't grasp the serioussnes of the problem. Any idea?

I have a question for you. Is the whining sound transmitted over the headphone jack? Mine is.

Could be your power supply, I don't think the processor is realated to a buzzing noise.

I have a hp6000t, i too use the RightMark Cpu app. It does eliminate the high pitched whine. But I am curious as to what exactly is the app doing to stop this whine. is it detremental in anyway to the perfomance of the laptop?

Definitely an interesting problem then . . I still think it is power-related. In some notebooks, you can hear the electricity going through the laptop, but it doesn't exactly sound like a buzz.

Try experimenting with different power modes and see if that does anything (Control Panel --> Power Options). It should be in Portable/Laptop mode by default.

Well the amount of the whining changes according to being plugged to AC or not. When plugged to AC I sometimes hear whining even with the RM Clock. What the hell is this? :) I don't wanna replace this thing, who knows what problem the next one have? Is this serious or not? Help us out! :)

Got the high pitch noise problem with my Dell M90 too, replaced mainboard, no use (Dell sent me a card from the same batch with the same date, so no real suprise). I think manufacturers went for the cheapest parts for the mainboards, just enough to handle Core Duo. Then Merom came that is a little bit different when it comes to power and BAM, components can't handle the stress and start to whine ^^

Do you guys think this is fatal kind of failure(to handle merom, see above)? I heard even macbook pros have the same thing. Now I am studying when it is whining I heard nothing but if this thing will cause mainboard to burn or serious stuff like that-although I have 3 yr warranty- I will change it. But apparently no one knows the exact dimensions of the issue. Well, I have one week to think!

    cheers,

Dell told me they had an investigation going, then they called back and said they wanted to start yet another one. I don't have time for that. I don't think you'll need to worry about the mainboard burning up or anything, but I can't say for certain. Is the sound more obvious when the computer is idling, or is it when loading the CPU?
Macbook Pro's don't run Merom so that would be another issue. There has been "alot" of reports the fans causing a whine though.

This was covered in a HP6000 thread a while back, seems most 6000 meroms make this highpitched sound when the CPU is idling. you have to put your ear next to the keyboard to hear it (at least on mine that is the case) didn't bother me at all. I didn't even know it existed untill I read the thread. then I followed the suggestion of running RightMark CPU. It works fine. no more noise. Some of you seems to have a much more serious (lounder) sound coming out though.

It is the same thing for me, too. I am inclined to keep my notebook- who knows the the shape of replacement will be-, I hope this does not cause problems in the future for us. I am gonna push Dell a little bit for an explanation, if anything comes up, I will post it up.

You should not enable 'Run HLT command when OS is idle'.

Whereas when the operating system is managing the power states of the processor it will put the processor into a C4 state when idle, when RMClock manages the power states, the deepest state RMClock will put the processor into is C1.

By enabling the option, you therefore use more power than is necessary and reduce battery life.

Update: I discovered something else, RM CLock shuts this thing up but when I tried to download my files from my girlfriends laptop via a network cable, there it is, the the old stupid electronic sound.

    any ideas?

Dell will have to take my laptop back, they offered me $200 refund on a $3000 purchase (too keep the laptop), almost fell off the chair. I can find no other reason other than cheap components. If a mainboard can't handle the electrical requirements for the Core 2 Duo, don't put it in there, should be simple enough.

It seems thats how dell saves money. They drop in core 2's into older systems and sell them as cutting edge. Notice how they sell 533Mhz memory, while c2d can do 667Mhz. Also, the built in DVD drive I don't think supports writing to DVD minus.

The laptop screen is f*ing nice though, best I've seen. That's what sold me on the purchase.

Not gonna deal with this whining though, its bad. Hopefull the replacement won't whine........

hehe, Dell has the worst screens I've ever seen on a laptop (tried three screens on my M90) :) It seems 1680*1050 (17") is the max resolution you can guarantee a really good screen at, and they don't even offer it :/
