hi , this happened with me in vista once or twice and now with xp it's the firsttime that this happen
let's say i close the lid , the system will be in standby mode of course , when i open the lid the screen is OFF and there's nothing i can do except a hard shutdown this rarely happens but it does and it's very very annoying
what could be the problems of this ??

For HP's laptops, you have to wait 2 seconds after opening up the lid and press the power button.
I just set the settings to "do nothing" when closing the lid.

sometimes the system does get confused. I noticed this sometimes on my dell laptop.
If I close the screen back down, and reopen it, it usually comes right back to life.
If it is not working for you, maybe the standby switch on your laptop has become very worn down over the years or whatever, and it is not working all of the time.

You can change it in power settings so the system doesn't go into sleep mode when the lid is closed

This can help overcome potential problems relating to sleep not working

look , i want the pc to go to sleep when i don't use it for 5 mins
i want to save battery (if not plugged)
so there's no real solution for this except not set to disable sleep ???
i don't think it's a problem from the lid , it's maybe a problem in sleep mode .....dunno honestly
it rarely happens , my laptop is 40 days old , thi sproblem happened to me 3 times in 40 days
the otehr times i open the lid and the system wakes up fro the sleep mode as normal

You can change the settings to make it go to sleep after 5 mins on battery but not on AC power, but Im not sure of it will solve the problem

Also, which drivers are you using
