I have an HP notebook and the screen is cracked, but when I got a price quote they said it would be almost $1,000 to fix if I sent it in.

Would I be able to replace the screen myself and how much would be the approximate cost to do this for a 15" screen

What's the specific model of the laptop? Screens usually cost about 250 dollars. My preferred vendor is Bliss Computers: http://www.blisscomputers.net/servlet/StoreFront

I change screens out on laptops (however... it is my job) and the task is not too difficult, though it does vary based on the model.

If you don't feel comfortable doing the job yourself, you can take it to a small independent computer shop (Geek Squad and the like will likely turn the work away or overcharge as much as HP does..)
The service should be around $100, perhaps less.

On ebay you can get a 15.4 inch screen for a dv6000's i asume you have for around $100-$200 and replace it your self in under 20 minutes.

haha. I'll have to check on the model number. It's my girlfriend's notebook and its kind of old but I'm guessing its probably something like a dv6000.

But this is cool. I just wanted to make sure this was possible and not too much of a pain in the @$$ to replace.

I'll check back in when I get the model.

    Thanks guys :)

Make sure you get the service media library (video manual) from HP, Compaq and Voodoo PC, it's in one of the stickies.
