I'm seeking a definitive answer to the question:

can the inspiron1720(santa rosa) handle an x7900?

    and if not why not?

the power consumption doesnt look much difference to say x9000 which it can handle.

ps: please dont avoid the question and tell me i should get a t9500 instead because the 1720 cant overclock... the x7900 is still 2.8GHz and is sometimes cheaper.

I would get the T9500, it's going to be as fast and cooler than the x7900. Aside from that, the x7900 puts out quite abit more heat than an x9000.

You know, there's at least one guy I've seen in the Dell forums who has an X9000 in his Inspiron 1720... so I'm fairly certain an X7900 will work (though it may need a lot of coaxing, if you will). That being said, it's not worth it. Go with that T9500 instead; save yourself the time and money.

a T9300 / T9500 would be the best bet they are 35 watt cpu's while the X7900 is a 44 watt. If your getting the x7900 for a good deal well then go for it and yes it will work.

Wait... Is there any proof that an Inspiron 1720 - can work with an X9000? And as in work, a BIOS support for it? I don't think this especially Inspiron laptop is capable of booting a 44 TDP high end processor.

Guessing from the previous posts, If your mind is fixed on using an X7900 then I guess it will be fine as long as you know how to work it out to avoid complications..
