im most likely getting a macbook, with a native res of 1280 by 800, but if i get an external desktop monitor with a way higher monitor, can the macbook make use of that, or will it just be restricted to its own res, which will make all icons on my new monitor look HUGE?

The graphics properties should be able to go much higher.

Just hook in the monitor and the Macbook should allow you to change the resolution output to the monitor.

    Hope this helps.
