7200 rpm 3200 hds just had a huge price drop.

But I still dont see the 500 gb 5400 rpm ones in the channel at all yet. I see them installed in notebooks but not for sale seperately.

Anyone know where I can buy one and what they cost?

    thanks,

Seagate 5400.6 has been just announced.

WD5000BEVT is available as OEM/Bulk, not Retail. Will be available as Retail sometime in mid-October.

Samsung HM500LI and Hitachi 5K500 are still out there as Retail/OEM.

Samsung HM500LI is the only one being sold right now of standard 9.5mm hight.

It's a 3 platter drive though. High powerconsumption and not so good performance. Better wait for the two platter ones like WD5000BEVT and Seagate 5400.6.

Andy the WD5000BEVT is not available yet, as far as I know. Neither OEM or retail.

Its available as OEM at Oveclockers and More Computers (UK). I called them up on the 30th, and they had it in stock, but £134 for a HDD. No way !!

I think LambdaTek also had it in stock, they were showing about 5 in stock, so I think they might be out-of-stock now.

I've just grabbed (I hope - it went out of stock after I placed my order) the last WD5000BEVT from Overclockers, LambaTek still have one which had a lower price but more expensive delivery.

I think they are still only being sold in Europe still for the time being. We have to wait a bit more for them to come to the states.

Do the new 500gb 7200rpm drives have three 160Gb platters, or do they have dual 250gb platters?

I have kinda been out of the loop cause of school work.

Looking forward to your benchies John.
I hope you are using it for your new E6400 :D

If the same 166GB platters in the 500GB 7200RPMs, then we'll see the same R/W rates, with higher access times.

The Seagate 7200.4 500GB will have two platters as far as I know.

Overclockers have got more stock of the WD5000BEVT and have dropped the price to just under £100 (incl VAT).

I have got them to adjust the price of my order since it hasn't yet shipped.

Can anyone already predict if these drives will reach the same transfer rates as the 320GB/7200rpm drives? or better?

They might be faster. A 50% increase in data density compared to the 320GB 5400rpm HDDs could mean a corresponding increase in transfer rates if the extra density is only in bits per track and not also by having more tracks. Scaling up the Tom's Hardware result for the WD3200BEVT would give give an average transfer rate of over 80MB/s. If they also pack in more tracks then the increase in transfer rates would be less. We shall find out once someone gets one of these HDDs and runs some benchmarks.

    Slightly better. Maybe.

I presume they will hit 80-90 average. (in HD Tune)

Oh ya they should be faster. full retail on the 320 7200 rpms JUST hit 110$ at newegg so I expect them soon.

If they are in canada at least I know they should be here any day. Both of them the wd and the new hitachi

Impressive scores kaltmond. Those transfer rates are better than a couple of WD3200BEKT results I just looked up.

16.0ms acces time is better than I expected.

    Nice results.

It seems mine is being shipped today.

I will be particularly interested in the power consumption, but that's not easy to measure.

it seems to perform a lot better than the samsung triple platter 5400rpm drive.

So it looks like we have not seen the limit of a 5400rpm drive yet in terms of data density :D

Their is a pretty big performance gain, in going from three 166gb platters to two 250gb platters, and the seek times are great.

    4100th post :D

I get about the same results with my WD3200BEKT take or give 1MB/s!

But it sure is impressive results for a 5400rpm drive, wonder what the rates would be @ 7200rpm :D I regret getting my 320GB drive when i see it's the same performance with lower rpm and more GB :)
