any laptop drives with 5 year warranty? I've seen the WD Blacks have them but, they are 7200 RPM. I've been told by some that the 7200 RPM drives run hotter than the 5400 RPM drives and the laptop may have no been designed to cool a 7200 RPM drive. A 7200 RPM drive is gonna pull more watts to spin that motor faster, and thusly your gonna have a little bit more friction/heat.

On the other hand there may exist the possibility such hard drive was built to operate in hot conditions.

cdoublejj, afaik among all modern models the difference is within 5 degrees, and their max temp is 60C, thus you shouldn't bother unless your laptop is really poorly designed.

how much gigs does it have to have? any other specs to

oh and he meant dont bother with heat. In general that is true with hard drives (however a 7200 might make more noise though)

Even my mom's 14" Vaio manages to keep a 320GB WD Black 7200rpm HDD around 42C during moderate use (browsing, movies etc), so I don't think you need to be concerned with heat.

720gb doesn't matter any more, Toshiba has to honor the warranty on said laptop so it's being taken care of.

The WD Black² has a 5400RPM drive, but you get a 120GB hard drive too.

    You mean a 120GB SSD.

The main problems in my mind with this product are the price, the shared connection between both drives, and the increased chance of failure - two drives cab fail rather than one.

Use this link Hard Disk Drives (HDD) mit Formfaktor: 2.5", Herstellergarantie: ab 5 Jahre Preisvergleich | Geizhals EU and it list 2.5"drives with 5 years warranty in Europe. You should however check for warrantydifferences at your country.

Personally I'd look at drives that are rated 24/7 which includes also 5400 RPM drives

60 of of them have 3 years. I use the wd1000GB and the hgst 1500GB sucessfully without problems so far.

There is minimal heat difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM hard drives. If you look at specs, peak and idle power consumption are only fractionally more (like 1.7 vs 1.75W) with a 7200 RPM HDD, and measured results from independent testing showed the same but with a power sipping notebook the battery life difference might be slightly noticeable. Although WD Blue drives are pretty reliable and snappy for a 5400RPM. And hard drives are cheap, so not sure why so worried about an extended warranty. After three years you'll probably want something bigger, faster, more power efficient, and you can probably buy that new tech for less than the cost you bought it today.

TBH why is the hard drive warranty that important? Most come with 1-3 years, with 5 being only available on top tier drives (like the Scorpio Black series). The data on the drives is typically worth much more than the physical drive itself which the hardware warranty does not cover.

so if it fails at 3 or 4 years one doesn't have to shell out more money fora new one.. .that's all. it doesn't matter any more, Toshiba had to fix it under warranty.

If it fails after 3 years you're probably better off getting a new (and better) drive anyway. But glad Toshiba got it fixed.
