I need to replace a hard drive on an older notebook.

    the existing model of is Hitachi Travelstar 80GN - 08K0864 80GB 4200RPM ATA-6 2MB Cache Notebook Hard Drive (IC25N080ATMR04-0 / IC25N080ATMR040 / IC25N080ATMR04)

any suggestions as to what to replace with? Guess I am looking for the right balance of cost, size and speed.

It is for a Compaq V2000 series notebook.

    Thanks.

PS I am not familiar with drive connection terminology i.e. SATA, IDE etc but I notice most drives on the market are SATA. Will that work in my notebook or do I need to look specifically for AT/IDE interface?

IDE/ATA interface is good for your notebook. I recommend go for either a 5400 rpm or 7200rpm. You'll notice some performance gain here.

    cheers ...

Don't take that one because it's a 80GB per platter drive.

Better take Samsung HM160HC or WD 320GB.

I have the Samsung, it's very fast, quiet and power efficient.

    I purchased a Samsung 160GB (HM160HC) 5400rpm ATA100 8MB Notebook Hard Drive (2.5 inch) to replace a Hitachi Travelstar 80GN - 08K0864 80GB 4200RPM ATA-6 2MB Cache.

Is this not a compatible replacement? I already bought it, don't think I can return it.

Why would it not be compatible?

I just noticed the connector attached to the old drive. I needed to pull it off and put it on the new drive.

Simply remove the old adaptor, and the new Samsung drive will work fine.

The HM160HC is the fastest drive you are going to get for the PATA interface, so it should breathe new life into your compaq

HM160C and WD2500BEVE/WD3200BEVE are the performance 2.5" PATA options. Can also do a 2.5" SATA HDD if prepared to swap out the optical drive with an 12.7mm sata-to-pata optical bay caddy. See sig if interested.
