There are no 1TB 2.5" drives at the moment, so you'll have to make do with 500GB for now.

As for brand, the WD Passports are well regarded, although you may be better off with building your own by getting a bare drive and an enclosure. Especially at the top end of the range (500GB), it'll probably be cheaper that way.

If you want performance from an external, you better have eSATA on your laptop.

And 500GB is the limit for 2.5" harddrives. But if you're looking for performance why don't you go with 3.5" ? Cheaper, faster and has higher capacity.

If you need to carry it around, just get one that is powered through USB and sends/recieves data via USB if you don't have eSATA. You aint saying if you have eSATA or not?

Performance will not be important on the hard drive if you do not have eSATA.
WD is king yes, with the WD3200BEKT.

You can chose any external enclosure, it's all up to you and what you want. There is nothing like you need a specific one for the one or another HDD, where have you read this?!

If you don't have eSATA, firewire offers better performance than USB2.

There's considerable variation in quality in external enclosures; alloy ones aren't necessarily better than plastic ones, but they're usually better made.
