Hi, I currently have a Lenovo x201 and am looking to hook an graphics card through EXP GDC external graphics dock.
My laptop has i5-520m processor, 8gb ram and also have a HD external monitor.
I will be connecting the egpu through expresscard slot.
However, I'm unsure what graphics card to buy?!?
The only game I want to play is h1z1 and don't want to buy a graphics card that is not over powerful. I am very new to all this and so would welcome your help.
    Thanks

@Kazarooney I'd say GTX 460 is as low as you can possibly go, and there is no way telling whether it is enough until you try; you should research eGPU subforum in gaming section for details on egpu compatibility and common choices. Also, check out this video - maybe it's just time to get another machine and save yourself a lot of trouble.

@Starlight5 Thank you very much for the help and advice I very much appreciate it! What would you have to say about using a GTX 560ti with this setup?

Has anybody had experience with setting up an eGPU with the Lenovo x201 in the past?

@Kazarooney GTX560 would be even better. Some used x201 with eGPU, but noone lived to tell the tale people more often post on forums when they encounter a problem, rather than reporting success. You should search the forum for x201 egpu, obviously.

Just a quick question! I have ordered a GTX 560ti for my egpu setup. Nvidia website recommends 500W power supply. Would I be able able to get away with a 300W supply?

Reason I ask is because the power supply is not powering a whole coamputer. It's going directly into the GPU

Sure. If you do not push the rest of your system to consume a true 130W or less. ;)

(With an 80% efficient PS, it is closer to less than 70W of 'spare power' for the rest of your components).

Edit: powering just the gpu should be fine.

No need for 500 watt, this only if you are using this psu for a PC. You can check from any that how much power required for only GPU ( GPU specs)

Hi, my new graphics card requires 2, 6 pci-e slots. However, my power supply is very old and has no pci-e pins. I'm not sure what to do.

I have attached a picture showing the cables coming from my GPU. My PSU has four molex cables coming from it, can I connect these four molex cables to the molex adapters coming from the GPU?

You can just connect these pins to eGPU adapter as there is a cable coming with this adapter for this issue

Hi, just received my egpu adaptor. I've hooked everything up and it's all connected. However, everytime I start up the laptop it's will not allow me to "start Windows normally" and I must keep going to startup repair.
My laptop recognises the egpu, and I even was able to download the drivers, but then I was told to restart. When it rebooted I couldn't get into windows and log in and it kept telling me to go through startup repair.

Hi, please ignore my previous post as I've got my eGPU setup up and working! However, one major problem, my psu is quite old now and hasn't been used in a very very long time! It's was very dusty and spent around 6 years in the attic unused.
Basically, I'll be playing games and the psu will obviously come under some load, however it starts to make quite loud bleeping noises and loud fan noises. Eventually, the whole eGPU will just randomly shut down whilst I'm playing. Then I'm able to restart my notebook and the egpu will all start working again, until it eventually randomly shuts down again .
Do you think it's time for me to invest in a new psu? Or is there anything else I can do?

@Kazarooney it's definitely time, and pick a PSU with strong 12V line if you want it low-watt - or just 500W+. Buying a used one might be a good idea.

Efficiency losses are added at the wall rather than taken off at the supply, an 80% efficient supply giving 400W will draw 500W from the wall.

Agreed, but most power supplies more than likely fall apart at 100% output...

    (sustained...).
