On the dell website when configuring a "Latitude D620" from their small business section, this are their options for upgrading ram..

512MB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 1 DIMM [Included in Price]

    1.0GB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS [add $69]
    New Lower Price

    2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS [add $249]

    2.0GB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 1 DIMM [add $850]

    4.0GB, DDR2-533 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS [add $1,750]

Why the hell does the 2 Gb of ddr2 533 ram cost SOO much more than the 667 ram?

Not a mistake because it(533) is 2GBX1(1 stick of 2GB RAM) where as the other one(667) is 2GBX2(2 sticks of 1GB RAM).

A 2GB stick of RAM is very expensive.

AND dell overcharges in a major way for their memory

it's nice to know its upgradeable to 4 gigs for the future, though

I thought it had something to do with it being one stick. Is that really necessary though? are you really gonna get much more performance out of that One stick of 2 gigs compared to the 2 gigs made up of 2 sticks? And what about the faster speed, the 667, does that make a difference?

The only reason is becaue 2gb sticks are very very rare as apposed to 1gig sticks. The speed doesnt really matter in price.

I would suggest getting 2GB RAM(made of two 1GB sticks), the reason 2GB sticks ar expensive is partly because they are still very new and not many people use it. So, manufacturers tend to over price. Having 2 sticks will enable dual channe and should provide slightly better performance than having a sngle stick, but with a single stick of 2GB RAM you will have the easier option of upgrading to 4GB later on. Other than this there is no other benefit of going to single 2GB memory.

I would suggest getting two 1GB sticks aftermarket, sicne RAM is pretty easy to upgrade and in some cases is definately cheaper than getting it from Dell.
