Just curious how many this is a must-have for.

YES = Would buy one without an internal drive.
NO = Must have internal drive.

I voted No; I change CDs too often to not have one and it's much more convenient IMO to just have to push a button rather than having to store the drive somewhere when not in use and hook it up when wanted.

I don't really use it that often, I have all the things i need on my computer or on another computer. I rather have all my stuff in one place rather than on a bunch of disks that can be scratched. They are also pretty light so my laptop can't really go lighter and I doubt the manufacturers can make the laptops much more thinner.

I voted no. I heard a rumor that the new Macbooks were supposed to exclude internal optical drives. How are we going to upgrade the OS and such without buying an external drive? I definitely don't want to download several gigabytes of data from the internet.

i had a dell x300 for years that had no optical drive. at 2.9 lbs and under an inch thick with the lid shut i didn't care. Seriously how often do you use a cd? if you use one your at your desk so you can plug in the docking station or usb drive. and if you want to watch dvds on the road, you can bring it along or jsut rip it to your hard drive so your battery lasts longer.

It all depends on the circumstances. If I was looking for a certain machine and a certain unit without a drive was a pound lighter and got an extra hour of battery life over this certain unit's equivalent that had a drive... I'd definitely go for the one without the drive. Most of the programs I install are standalones and programs that I can install without a disk, so I don't really have any qualms with using an external drive when necessary.

I think it depends on the role of the computer. I might do, but I'd rather have a DVD drive for mobile entertainment, even with a UP.

My used Latitude D400 doesn't have one. It's sometimes annoying having to hook up the USB optical. I'd rather have a built in optical, but would and have bought laptops without one.
