So as my signature shows I have a toshiba equium L350 10P and I have upgraded the CPU to the T7300 2.0ghz.
Well I decided to upgrade the RAM to 4GB
I have the intel chipset GL960
If I put anything over 2GB ram in it I get BSOD on reboot. Even going into safe mode.
I thought it was the dynamic boost on the CPU where it fluctuates from 10x multiplier to 11x and in turn increasing ram frequency too high!
It is recognised in the bios at 4GB but windows does not like it.
I'm just getting a live iso image if Linux mint to see if it's hardware or software.
Any guys got any idea?

When booting Linux mint it errors
[0.308137]pci 0000:02:00.0: unsupported PM cap regs version (7)
This is what happens on memory test on Linux mint

Ooooooooooh pretty colors.
Well according to Intel's specs, GL960 officially only supports 2 GB DDR2. If you use known good 2 GB sticks and still BSOD, your chipset may not like the RAM. Just like GM/PM965 officially only supports 4 GB but certain manufacturers did not limit the RAM to 4 GB in the BIOS, so some will go to 6 or even 8 GB RAM. -
Hey Ysunade_Hime.
I ran sandra and it stated the chipset supported 4gb RAM. I think the error from reading around forums relating to linux it appears is a Power Managment issue and toshibas. It seems to be related to the NIC??
The memory test error? Not sure. Its just odd that it appears in the BIOS and reads 4gb or 3gb?
I think Im gonna turn of network devices and see if I can boot into Linux with 4gb ram then?? -
Hmmm.
If I put a 1gb in slot1 then 2gb in slot2 it will boot?? But not other way round??
GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Even more annoying is corsair website says it will run 4GB in my laptop
That is if the FSB is at 533mhz! what gives. -
Does anybody have any ideas why ram is detected in bios but os won't detect it/errors
-
there is a linux distro, stresslinux, which has all the tools needed to check out a machine. You might want to grab it and run it on your machine for a day or two to see if anything is really failing.
Stresslinux, the iso d/l is approx 220Mb
Have you reset your system BIOS yet? Just find the item that resets everything to factory-fresh and after that, run the linux distro I mentioned. -
thanks newsposter, I will give that a go and post back results
-
Well I cannot get anything to get to install stage, Here are two BSOD I get
The first seems to be a IRQ issue? I just can't understand it?? Odd. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Does it BSOD with just 4 GB, or does it also BSOD with 2 GB?
-
Just 4Gb not with 2Gb or 3Gb, It doesn't matter which new RAM I run with the original to make the 3Gb.
I Ran Memtest with both sticks of 2Gb at a time and no errors are reported (I know MEMtest isn't reliable)
I checked on the Strontium Website and it is compatible memory for my chipset/board. -
Are you trying to install a customized/modified version of XP??
The BSOD is a typical XP error when you're trying to load a modified version of XP onto a newer system that XP does not have the proper cpu drivers in place for.
The linux error you posted is also typical of an attempted installation on a machine that requires drivers not in the linux distro.
Are you absolutely sure that your machine **and the BIOS** completely support the cpu you installed? -
yeah. Its the RAM thats the issue I think. I am installing windows 7.
I just think its a limit, I cant install no more than 3gb.
