It used to be cheaper to get a similiarly configured vostro then an inspiron, and Dell caught on fast. Who knows why they're doing that, it could be a mistake.

I saw that a couple of days ago. I couldn't understand it either. But I thought great! It does make the choice easy? Yes? Get a better CPU for $170 less? I thought it was a mistake but has not been fixed so maybe not? They do have complicated pricing and does get confusing, same system has different prices depending where you start. But this is so counter intuitive I can't even make up a reason why it could be.

I noticed the same thing as well. I also noticed that on the Vostro it is like 600 bucks to upgrde, but on the 1400 it is a couple hundred less for the same processor. I think they are just having a Dell moment, their website is changing daily, and not always making sense.

Should be fixed soon, it's funny that such a large organization has these little faults...

They should have the 80GB HD be $400 extra and the 320GB 7200RPM drive be a $200 discount, now that's a good mistake.

Actually I just ordered that yesterday Vostro 1500 with the cheaper T9300 lol along with the 8600 GT.It's only for the 1500..its normal on the 1400.At first I thought the T8100 is some special chip or something...then I compared the specs to the T9300 and it just don't add up.It might be a mistake or its just a sales ploy to make the upgrade to T9300 looks cheap..I mean geez its still a $500 upgrade(well from the celery).Kinda like a girl going out with her fat friend to make herself look better.I just hope the don't cancel the order on me
    if its a mistake.

I just ordered a Vostro 1500 with the T8100 and free fall 160 hard drive for $1,300. I was fooling around with Dells website doing different configurations and somehow the T8100 wound up being less expensive than the T7250. I printed out the pricing and called Dell the next day.

They said it wasn't possible and I couldn't get that price again. It kept showing up as $1,800. I told the sales girl that I had the printed config and she told me to fax it. I did, she got her supervisor and they gave it to me for the price.

I got blue tooth, Office, 128 Nvidia card and the free fall for $1,300 (I could have gotten the 250 GB included, but wanted the Free Fall instead) with tax and free shipping.

Something is wrong with their site. I suggest fooling around with the configurations and when then print it up. They have to give it at the price you get, even if its wrong. Their site is messed up.

They have a $500 off special at the moment, so going from $1800 to $1300 isn't that big of a deal I think...

tertius is on to something! Kate can you tell me which Office you picked? It does look like you may have gotten a good price but I just configured with T9300 and the $500 Office and came out at $1322. $22 for a T9300 is a deal and if you got the other office it will cost a couple hundred less with better CPU. As you are aware and this thread is about, DeLLs price structure is insane. Even though you got one for cheaper than they want to sell it you should confirm you cannot do better for same price or cheaper.

Edit: Kate I made a few mistakes. I have to tell you with a better CPU I can get (I don't mean me only I mean you also)) For under $1,000. You need to repost so all are on the same page and get you the cheapest notebook! I do not believe you are there yet. Post back and go through it again and save lots of money!

Now I'm upset because I just got the email that it was shipped. I wonder if I should send it back?

I got Office Basic, webcam and bluetooth. I thought I got a good deal because it kept configuring at $1,800 until suddenly I got it at $1,140.000 and I added the webcam and blue tooth. With tax it came to $1,329.00.

I would have like the better processor but thought I was doing good with the T8100.

    Kate $1,001
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache)
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
    Microsoft Office 2007 Basic
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Anti-Glare Display
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
    24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
    128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS
160GB Free Fall Sensor Hard Drive, 7200RPM, for Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook
Dell Exclusive MediaDirect™ Instant Play Software Application
    Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Wi-Fi Internal Card
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate), Vista
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera

I would reccomend spending $99 more for 8600m GT.

$200 cheaper better CPU and GPU ($300 as above), what do you think?

Yes I believe you can cancel your order. I would call DeLL and say look I don't want as I have not even received and I can get a much better system for less. Be careful as they are likely going to offer you discounts rather than have to take back. Well even by their own price points yours should only cost $850 (vs my config) so you can do but don't let them trick you!

Good luck Kate and best wishes, oh and happy Easter or Passover or Bunny day or whatever!

Edit: I would only take the system you configured for $750 no more!

Edit II: I would upgrade the CD to a DVD RW I think about $35 but the point is the same. The 1GB of RAM upgrade on your own, you will need more but DeLL charges way to much.

    Happy Easter to you too.

I ordered XP Pro because it is for work and will be part of an office. Can't do Vista - software problems. It has been shipped (email). What would I do? Return it? The price I got was with 2 gigs ram, XP Pro and I did order the DV CD DRW drive. If I could get the price down, I would get the better processor.

    Thanks for your advice,
    Kate

I find Blue Tooth incompatible with XP? Anyway with what you have told me I can get the same as you got w/T9300 for $1,176. I think they will charge for shipping. So call and talk to them. Like I said the are going to want you to keep it and will offer discounts. I now think they need to offer you better than $1,176 I say $1,100 minimum. I say $1,000 maybe.
