Why does my 2013 AW17R1 boot up faster than my new 2017 AW15R3?

I bought a 2013 AW17R1 in crappy shape on ebay for $350. I replaced the processor with an i7 4940MX, the video card with an GTX880M, 2 Samsung 850Evo SSD's and put in 32GB of ram. I also replaced the battered up palm rest, keyboard & LED screen. Installed Win 10 Home.

The 2017 AW15R3 is stock with 128GB M.2, 16GB ram, 6700HQ, I put in a Samsung Evo 850 SSD and it came with a GTX1070.

The old Alienware's Win. 10 open page comes up at 4 to 5 seconds faster. Hard to believe. Is it from the 4940MX processor upgrade from the stock 4720 MQ? But the newer 6700HQ processor is supposed to be faster.....any thoughts?

 

hi, newer cpu's are not necessary faster, and 4940mx has 8mb cache vs. 6mb of the 6700hq , windows configuration, bios configuration are also factors. you could try the old 4720mq, but i guess it's not much slower then.

 

If the old laptop had a SATA SSD and the new one has NVMe, then there's the issue. NVMe SSDs take longer to initialize during the boot process even though their performance is actually faster, they need time to get initialized which sucks. Same thing with me, my wife's 6 year old Dell Vostro with a Crucial MX100 500GB SSD boots within 8 seconds to Windows while my 10,000 USD GT75 laptop would still be at the splash screen trying to initialize the NVMe SSDs while she's already in her desktop.

 

Sell that 880m and get the MSI 1070 instead

 

Will the MSI 1070 fit in that chassis? Will brightness controls work if it does?

 

Yeah there is a success case here on the forums for the MSI 1070 working in the Ranger. There is another case of the Zotac 1070 also working (with less hardware mods) but isnt as "practical" since you have to gut it from the zbox (expensive).

As for brightness you'd have to ask the man himself, @loafer987 iirc

 

My M18xR2 boots up faster than my Clevo P870DM3 did and my Alienware 17 R1.

I think it just depends on the BIOS and like @Phoenix said the NVMe drives need time to initialize.

Look at the physics score. the 6700hq is about 15% slower than my 4930mx at 4ghz (small overclock and undervolt) Their gpu score is higher as they are the largest overclock on the 3dmark page. I am running my gpu stock in this test.
Brightness controls work like stock, the only issue I have with the 1070 is every time I upgrade the graphics card drivers I need an external display plugged in as the internal display goes black every time I install new drivers. Its a known issue listed in the nvidia drivers themselves. That and the large amount amount of cutting I had to do to make the card fit.
The newer laptops with BGA processors were very disappointing and the very reason I kept my AW17 R1.

 

Indeed, the 6700HQ is only 3.1GHz.

 

With BCLK OC hack.. you will see alot of difference. Especially on heavy physics gaming All cores will be 3.2Ghz while 1 core reach maximum of 3.6Ghz due to I increased it to only 102.7 Mhz BCLK which caused +100MHz to any numbers of cores

Still trying to OC more on a non-oc 6700hq CPU... maawwrrr poowwaaa

 

Add about +8/10% IPC increase on top. Still wouldn’t help
