Anyone know why RAM has taken a huge price hike? Laptop 2 x 2GB used to be ~$50 now it's like ~$70+.

    Quite shocking.

A lot of the RAM companies couldn't make money with the prices as low as they were. So they lowered production, which in time caused the flooded market to return to normal, and they were able to charge more again since there was no longer a surfeit of RAM available.

The transition to DDR3 has also caused DDR2 demand to fall, hurting the DDR2 economies of scale, and putting upward pressure on prices (similar to how DDR is more expensive than it once was). DDR3 has still been falling or even in prices as far as I'm aware.

But yes, it is more expensive. I'm glad I grabbed 4 GB of laptop DDR2 for $35 last fall!
