    Hi

Im looking to buy a Sony vaio next week but i don't know if i should buy the laptop with Sony's 265gb which is raid 0 or should i get a normal hdd and upgrade it with an intel 160gb ssd. The 256gb ssd is a £800 upgrade and the intel is around £400, which would be faster? Is there a faster ssd around with 160gb +?

    Thanks

Intel is the fastest SSD you will find at a consumer level ATM.

    Not entirely true.

On the reviews I've seen the OCZ Vertex beats the Intel in a number of real world tests such as boot time and game load times.

Not according to users in the SSD forum, which is more valuable than any review IMO.

Link? All the reviews I've read show the Intel a few seconds ahead, or at best, even.

we've discussed that review in the ssd thread. and as the numbers for the intel are worse than my numbers, and i have the older intel, i don't trust them.

those numbers are much worse than mine, and they tested the new one, on a fast system. i have the old one, on a slower system.

the intel has the best balanced performance. doesn't make it leader in every benchmark (but nearly every :)), but best device in actual usage.

but the vertex is very close (haven't reallife tested one yet), and offers more storage. which may be a big pro :)

Those speeds don't really make a difference since majority of the speed is felt by random R/W and access times. While you might have been lucky with a Jmicron SSD, most are worst than regular HDDs.

Actually I said a number of real world tests and then gave a couple of examples.

You don't class file copying as real world?

And what do you call this:

Look at the two pages of PCMark Vantage results that I have already linked to.

Try reading the info I provide next time.

Do you know what the word implying means, by any chance? Your exact words were this "On the reviews I've seen the OCZ Vertex beats the Intel in a number of real world tests such as boot time and game load times." Note that the examples you listed are more read/IOPS based, implying that the Vertex was faster in those areas.

You then linked to reviews that showed Vertex to be better in benchmarks where sequential writes play a significant role, where the Vertex is obviously faster.

    See the issue here?
Jmicron drives are great at large file copies too.

    Whatever.
